Loyola's Communication Department is an actively engaged group that focuses on excellence in teaching and work outside the classroom. The curriculum prepares students to be communication experts for their professional career after Loyola and as lifelong learners.
Faculty members encourage students to become involved in the program beyond the classroom experience through engagement in co-curricular activities including GreyComm Studios, The Greyhound and WLOY. The faculty also assists upperclassmen in obtaining internships for credit throughout the year. The hope is that all students will want to become involved in department activities and contribute to an engaging academic environment and the Baltimore community.

Bio:
A storyteller at heart, Bill Margol has over 30 years of experience in the media industry as a Producer, Development Executive, Network Executive and Head of Production. He has developed and created groundbreaking and acclaimed documentaries that have reached from the stars to the stage to the farthest places on planet Earth and into the inner workings of the brain. In 2017 Bill won the Emmy for Outstanding Science Documentary for developing and executive producing 鈥淎 YEAR IN SPACE鈥� for PBS and was again Emmy nominated in 2020 for 鈥淒AVE CHAPELLE: THE MARK TWAIN PRIZE鈥� and 2021 for 鈥�8 DAYS: TO THE MOON AND BACK.鈥澨齀n 2026, Bill Executive Produced the Emmy Award winning documentary 鈥淪IMON SCHAMA: THE HOLOCAUST 80 YEARS ON鈥� for PBS. He created the long-running and highly acclaimed series 鈥淏RAIN GAMES鈥� for National Geographic, and developed and oversaw production of Travel Channel鈥檚 longest running hit series 鈥淎NTHONY BOURDAIN: NO RESERVATIONS.鈥� Bill has led production and development teams in the creation of hundreds of hours of content for PBS, National Geographic Channel, Travel Channel, Turner Network Television and Sci-Fi Channel, and TIME Studios. As an educator, Bill has brought his real-world experience into College and University classrooms at American University and Howard Community College.

Research:
Dr. Rui Wang (Ph.D., University at Buffalo) studies emerging technologies, social media, and political communication. Combining novel computational methods with quantitative approaches, her research focuses on three core areas: (1) the content, users, and effects of digital and news media in the context of identity politics and polarization; (2) the social and psychological dimensions of emerging technologies, particularly public understanding and acceptance of AI; and (3) the development and application of computational methods for social science research. Her work has appeared in journals such as Communication Research, New Media & Society, Information, Communication & Society, Social Media + Society, Journalism, Social Science Computer Review, and the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction.

Dr. Karsonya 鈥淜aye鈥� Wise Whitehead 鈥� 蓝莓视频 Biography
Dr. Karsonya 鈥淜aye鈥� Wise Whitehead is a historian of Black life in America whose work explores how Black history is remembered, taught, and carried into the present. She is a professor of Communication and African and African American Studies at 蓝莓视频 and the founding executive director of the Karson Institute for Race, Peace & Social Justice, where her work brings scholarship into conversation with public history, education, and community life.
An award-winning author of five books, Whitehead鈥檚 scholarship includes Notes from a Colored Girl: The Civil War Pocket Diaries of Emilie Frances Davis, which received the Darlene Clark Hine Book Award from the Organization of American Historians and the Letitia Woods Brown Book Award from the Association of Black Women Historians. Her most recent book, my mother鈥檚 tomorrow: dispatches through the lens of Baltimore鈥檚 Black Butterfly, examines Black life, place, memory, family, and community in Baltimore.
Dr. Whitehead serves as the 30th president of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1915 and the nation鈥檚 oldest organization dedicated to the study and promotion of Black history.
She hosts the award-winning radio show Today With Dr. Kaye on WEAA 88.9 FM, where she brings historical perspective to conversations about some of the stories that matter in American life. Her work in radio and journalism has earned two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, eleven Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association Awards, and the Vernon Jarrett Medal for Journalistic Excellence.
Before entering academia, Whitehead worked as a documentary filmmaker and television producer, including as a senior producer for MTV, and received three New York Emmy nominations. She holds a Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Culture from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; an M.A. in International Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame; and a B.A. in history from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Across her career, Whitehead鈥檚 scholarship, journalism, teaching, and public work have been recognized with more than 45 awards and honors. Across her scholarship, teaching, public history, media work, and institutional leadership, she examines how Black history lives beyond the archive鈥攕haping the stories we tell, the communities we build, and the America we are still becoming.
