Music at Loyola Concert Series showcases performing arts

The Music at Loyola Concert Series offers a series of student-focused concerts, recitals, and other performances. These events provide a way for passionate musicians to showcase everything they have worked on throughout the year. The ensembles, presented by Loyola's Department of Visual and Performing Arts, are free and open to the public.
Cantorei Concert

“Cantorei is a vocal jazz group that focuses on music from the American Songbook—popular music from the 1920s to 1950s often performed by jazz and popular singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, and more—as well as newer jazz and jazz-adjacent vocal music,” explained Clay Price, D.M.A., director of choral studies. “Cantorei Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform a selection of standards, popular vocal music, and new music.”

“This concert, ‘Songs for the People,’ will include something for everyone: madrigals, African American spirituals, 19th and early 20th century songs, and several pieces by modern composers, as well,” said Price. “The concert theme comes from the Frances Ellen Watkins Harper poem of the same name, which is also a song text to be sung at the concert.”

This semester, 24 students enrolled in vocal study as part of their music curriculum, from beginners to advanced musicians.
“For the spring 2026 theme, students prepared art songs from 1695 throug 1995, American popular song from the 1920s and ‘30s, plus selections from musical theater in the 2000s,” said Julie Kurzava, affiliate faculty member of visual and performing arts and instructor of both courses.
Chamber Ensemble Recital

David LaVorgna, chamber ensemble director and applied lesson instructor (flute), will lead small instrumental groups formed from combinations of strings, woodwinds, brass, and piano. The repertoire offers a wide range of styles and periods, and a mixture of compositions including transcriptions, arrangements, and compositions in their original intended form.

“After classes are done for the day, grab a beverage, and come enjoy some Caribbean-inspired music while lounging on the Quad,” said Price. “You’ll hear both new and familiar songs performed by our pannists with assistance by ensemble director Barry Dove.”
Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo Concert

Loyola students, alumni, and faculty will perform at the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo Concert. Directed by Mark St. Pierre, there will be a variety of jazz performances spanning different forms and decades.
