Association of Latinx American Students (ALAS) logo featuring letters filled in with various Latin American flagsHispanic/Latinx Heritage Month (LHM) offers the Loyola community a chance to participate in programs and events to celebrate Latinx heritage, nationally known as . Programs and events during National Hispanic Heritage Month take place from Sept. 15-Oct. 15. The significance of Sept. 15 is to recognize the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras. For Mexico, Chile, and Belize, the month of October also carries great value since these nations celebrate their independence days.

Today, National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month seeks to recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latinx Americans to the United States. Please join us in this annual tribute by learning about the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our lives and this nation.

Theme for the 2026-27 Academic School Year

ALAS's theme for the 2026-27 school year is Noche En Habana (translated as Night in Havana). "This year, ALAS aims to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Latin culture, while creating spaces where everyone can come together. Inspired by vibrant streets, music, dance, and the community of Havana, the month will showcase our heritage through food, music, performances, and shared experiences. We hope to continue breaking down stereotypes and show what truly represents us as a whole and individually, as well as highlighting our roots, and appropriating the aspects that American culture has found trending today.

ALAS wants to continue making the Loyola community a more welcoming, safe and relaxed space for all Latinx students and create the vibrant culture of Hispanic nightlife and social life, in rhythms in Havana that have inspired Hispanic culture. Latin Fest and Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month is for everyone to enjoy. Whether you identify as Latinx or not, join us and learn what the Latinx culture and community is all about!" ~ALAS
